Strata Roofing offers the highest quality of asphalt roofing, in the form of polymer modified asphalt.

Asphalt (also known as mastic asphalt) has been used as a roofing material for centuries and offers excellent waterproofing. It’s manufactured by combining limestone and bitumen, and is most commonly used as a hardwearing, waterproof surface for roofs, balconies and many other structures.

Polymer modified asphalt (PMA), created by adding a polymer to the mix, is more effective in terms of both wear and waterproofing. Tests have shown that it resists wear from wind, rain and hail at a considerably higher level than traditional mastic asphalt.

PMA offers total waterproofing integrity for roofing and tanking, acting as a tough working surface and damp-proof membrane in flooring. It’s also ideal for paving, offering a durable surface for the paving to be laid on.

Besides roofing, we also use PMA to construct balconies and walkways. These can be anything from a single balcony for a private house to walkways for a major complex, and PMA offers excellent protection against heavy use, as well as waterproofing and weatherproofing.

If you want your asphalt flat roof to include a terraced area, we use Spartan Tiles to provide the surface and finish. These have the advantage of being porous, meaning that they absorb water and prevent pooling. Combined with a PMA underlay, a Spartan Tiles terraced roof area is a perfect mix of elegance and durability.

Besides its numerous practical advantages, we love using mastic asphalt, because it’s a natural product which is both carbon neutral and fully recyclable when it does eventually have to be replaced. Though that may not be necessary for many years.

Installing mastic asphalt is a highly skilled job and must be carried out by trained professionals.
